Senghenydd - Documenting a mining village

Senghenydd is a former mining village in the Aber Valley, Wales. It was the site of two major coal mining disasters, in 1901 and 1913, that claimed the lives of hundreds of miners. The 1913 explosion was the worst mining accident in British history, killing 439 men and boys.

I grew up in Senghenydd, as did my parents, my mother still lives in the same house she was born in. The village is known for its strong sense of community and culture, especially its male voice choir, which was formed in 1908 and still performs today. The choir has won many awards and has toured internationally, representing the Welsh tradition of choral singing. The village also has a memorial garden and a heritage trail, which commemorate the mining history and the lives lost in the disasters.

See link at the bottom of this page for imagery of the annual Memorial event I documented in 2018.
